Michael Patak started Topstep so that aspiring traders could learn the craft without making the same expensive mistakes that nearly ruined him financially. Topstep is built with traders in mind, rewarding sound risk management by helping build productive habits that last a lifetime.
When Topstep launched in 2012, they quickly became an industry disruptor. Several years later, they approached us with their a new, striking brand in need of a website to launch their new look to the public. I took advantage of their bold new look and prominently featured oversize typography, stylized photography, and direct messaging as part of the site design. We also introduced subtle animations throughout the site to elevate the user experience and reinforce Topstep’s commitment to pushing technology and their brand forward.

Approach
As the designer of the website, I led the project from the initial kickoff call with the client through every stage of development. Collaborating closely with the Topstep team and our development partner, InsideOut, I designed the initial landing page and full website to reflect their bold brand identity, ensuring a seamless user experience.
My team and I started with the desktop design – crafting a sitemap and wireframing while we designed an interim landing page. Our primary focus was on desktop optimization, given that most traders accessed the site from desktop devices. However, recognizing the need for responsiveness across all screen sizes, we also developed unique mobile templates. This approach ensured that the site maintained optimal performance and usability regardless of the device being used.
Additionally, I built a series of icons for Topstep, creating dark and light theme sets for versatile use across various platforms. This attention to detail ensured that the icons maintained consistency with the overall brand while enhancing the user interface.
